Flipping switches.

This is the switch plate at the top of my stairs.

The switch on the right turns the stair lights on and off.

The switch on the left does nothing.

Well, it does do something. It activates an outlet in which I have nothing plugged.

So if the flipping left switch doesn’t have any effect, why do I feel it necessary to flip it every time I flip the right switch?

My first thought is symmetry, but I fear the real answer may be Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
